Orchids are regarded as one of the most colorful and magnificent flowering plants. Back in the old days,  it was highly coveted and reserved only for the rich. It was a craze among them. Now, it is easier to get orchids and caring for orchids is more easier if equipped with the right knowledge. You can choose from thousands of species those that fit your personal preference and level of skill as a plant grower.

Each  different species of orchids has different requirements. Although some of their needs are similar to that of other plants.  However, it is necessary that before buying your orchid, you research the particular requirements it needs to grow properly and continually produce beautiful flowers. After all, we are after the vibrant and exotic blooms. There are certain species that require lots of sunlight and there are those species that can thrive in an indoor environment. The most popular orchid that people commonly grow in their homes is the Phaleanopsis, also known as Moth orchid.  Most people choose Phaleanopsis, because they are easy to care for and do well in most indoor conditions compared to the other varieties.

Orchids need light to grow and bloom, if taken care of correctly flowering will last for at least three months. Since most orchids originate from tropical regions, they are a light hungry plant. But there are species that require less sunlight like the Phaleanopsis variety. They can thrive in a low light environment, which is why it is best for indoor use. For best results, place your orchids near the window to catch sunlight during morning and/or evening. Do not place the orchid in the full noon sun because midday sun can be too hot and harmful to the plant. Too much heat will burn the leaves and wilt the flowers.  An excellent location to place your orchid in is the eastern side of your home. In absence of sunlight especially during winter, you can use artificial light such as a fluorescent lamp.

Orchids prefer temperatures between 55º to 80º F (12.78º C – 26.68º C). They don’t like sudden temperature changes and temperatures higher than 90 degrees (32.22º C) can cost them their precious buds and worse, they will stop blooming altogether. Keep the plant moist by watering them once a week or every other week, but do not over water them as this can cause it to drop its flowers. The plant can also be placed in a tray to keep it moist, be careful not to touch the water with the roots otherwise, it will take in too much water.

One way to improve and maintain the orchids’ blooming is to use fertilizer but not more than once a month, too much can damage the plants instead of helping them.   Use plant soluble fertilizers that are specific for orchids and with less nitrogen content, too much nitrogen will encourage leaf growth to the expense of flowers. The best time to apply fertilizer is before orchids bloom. An additional tip to extend the flowering period is to prune the plant carefully while it is still flowering. With the right amount of care and correct fertilization there is no stopping your orchids blooming and thriving healthily.
